A popular saying in India goes: Roti Kapada aur Makaan—Food, Clothes and Shelter, describing the three essential needs of a human being. In Western societies, clothes are often taken for granted in this trilogy, but the struggle for Kapada remains a reality people on the streets must face in India. Businessman Anshu Gupta was shocked by the story of Bano, a young Indian girl. With many people dying of cold on the Delhi streets during the winter, Bano stayed warm by sleeping against the bodies of the dead that her father collected for the Indian government. Gupta left his job and founded GOONJ, an NGO that provides clothes to underserved people, who are asked in exchange to contribute to a communal construction project.
GOONJ has supported many villages with the construction of bridges and dams with recycled materials from the cities, while providing cloths for those in need. The organisation has also expanded with their Not just a piece of Cloth initiative, to supply Indian women of underprivileged backgrounds with safe, reusable and hygienic sanitary pads, as documented in the following (1:43) video:
We selected Anshu Gupta as one of our 25 entrepreneurs we would like to meet to meet for his commitment to marginalized and underrepresented populations. His work for GOONJ earned him the Social Entrepreneur of the Year award for 2013 by the international Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship. Gupta is an inspirational figure, reminding us to focus our work on issues that matter for people in need. He was among the first to confirm his interest in being a part of our project.
Anshu Gupta will be featured in the INDIA 25 documentary, as one of 25 social entrepreneurs in India, who are tackling real problems with innovative and creative answers.
